Diagnostic services

Royal Papworth Hospital provides a range of diagnostic services to assess the structure and function of the heart, including: 

  • Holter Monitoring (Ambulatory ECG recorded over 24/48 hour period)
  • Event recording (recording rhythms of heart)
  • Exercise Tests (tracing recording during a measured piece of exercise)
  • Echocardiography (measurement of the structure and function of the heart chambers and valves)
  • Tilt Test (to assess causes of faintness of dizziness)

Cardiology

Royal Papworth is one of the UK's leading centres in coronary angiography, angioplasty and stenting, undertaking high volumes with a lower complication rate than other peer group hospitals.

Royal Papworth is also a leading centre for intervention in structural heart disease including closure of septal defects and transcatheter treatment of valve disease. Royal Papworth is one of the first centres in Europe to offer transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI), a procedure for patients at high risk with aortic valve disease.

Electrophysiology and Devices

Royal Papworth is one of the UK's leading centres for Electrophysiology (EP). This rapidly developing area uses the latest 3D mapping equipment and is the fastest growing cardiology service in the hospital, the UK and internationally.

Royal Papworth is a major centre for device implantation including pacemakers, biventricular pacemakers and implantable defibrillators.

Cardiac Surgery

Royal Papworth is one of the UK's leading and largest specialist providers of cardiac surgery including Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG). 

Royal Papworth is the UK's largest valve repair/replacement centre.

Respiratory Support and Sleep Centre (RSSC)

Royal Papworth is the largest national centre for the provision of ventilator support and sleep medicine.

Referrals are received from all over the UK for all types of sleep disorders; obstructive sleep apnoeas, narcolepsy and unusual behaviours during sleep. The Centre, which features a Sleep Clinic, is the largest in the UK.

The RSSC provides a progressive care programme, domiciliary ventilation, (respiratory support at home) specialist oxygen systems and the management of a wide range of both respiratory and non-respiratory sleep disorders.

Support services

Radiology 

Royal Papworth Hospital's Radiology Service has a key role in the diagnosis of all cardiothoracic conditions. The service uses state-of-the art imaging technology and facilities include a dedicated 64-slice cardiac dual source CT scanner and a MRI scanner.

The five angiography suites allow access to:

Our DEXA scanner offers the latest technology in bone density imaging and the combination of a questionnaire and scans means that we are able to provide a personalised and comprehensive report for each of our patients.

Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD)

The Interstitial Lung Disease service treats patients with unusual lung conditions which are difficult to diagnose and treat. Patients undergo a programme of investigations. The results are discussed by a multidisciplinary team in order to establish a diagnosis and personal plan.

The Lung Defence Service has a reputation for securing diagnosis and treatment for patients with difficult pulmonary infections. It is the only service in the UK to have a dedicated bronchiectasis ward.

The Cystic Fibrosis Centre has gained a national and international reputation for its contribution to research. It provides single ensuite rooms for adult patients. The rooms are air-conditioned and designed to improve the patient experience with features such as televisions, DVD players and Wii Fit games.

Our Respiratory Physiology Laboratory provides for the most advanced diagnostic technology and methods used in respiratory function measurement in the continual assessment of respiratory problems.

Pulmonary Vascular Disease Unit (PVDU)


Royal Papworth is one of the UK's leading specialist centres for the diagnosis and treatment of pulmonary vascular diseases. The PVDU is uniquely able to offer both medical therapy and surgical treatment under one roof.

Royal Papworth is the only UK hospital to offer Pulmonary Endarterectomy (PEA) surgery for pulmonary hypertension. Papworth's accumulated experience of over 500 operations represents the third largest world experience.
