Dr Shapiro has diverse clinical interests and is the Medical Advisor to the Football Association, especially involved in screening footballers for heart disease. Dr Shapiro established a Nationwide Cardiac Screening Programme to look for life threatening heart problems in young footballers to prevent the tragedy of sudden death. Dr Shapiro, in conjunction with the Medical Department of the Football Association and the Professional Footballers Association, has examined nearly 20,000 footballers in this ongoing project. Dr Shapiro has a special interest in structural heart disease. This includes establishing a Specialist Valve Service with a clinic on a Monday and a clinic for interventions in congenital heart disease. He has a particular expertise in structural intervention performs TAVI, and closes holes in the heart (ASD/PFO) and paravalvular leaks and the left atrial appendage as well as treating other valvular and congenital cardiac conditions.

Dr Shapiro graduated with Honours from the University of Manchester in 1976, having previously gained a 1st Class Honours Degree in Medical Biochemistry. Dr Shapiro undertook a research degree (MD) in diabetic Heart Disease that was completed in 1981. Dr Shapiro had post-graduate training in London at the Hammersmith Hospital and then the Brompton Hospital before completely his training at the National Heart Hospital. He was appointed as a Consultant Cardiologist at Papworth Hospital in Cambridge in 1988.
