What is ReSPECT?
Royal Papworth NHS Foundation Trust has adopted ReSPECT (Recommended Summary Plan for Emergency Care and Treatment) to empower our patients and/or their representatives to make decisions about treatments and care they would wish for in an emergency. ReSPECT is a national initiative developed by the Resuscitation Council (UK) and is a conversation between the clinician and patient and/or representative. The conversation will discuss what a patient most values about their care and what they most fear or wish to avoid. The clinician and patient will then discuss treatments and clinical recommendations, what is agreed upon by both clinician and patient is recorded on a form. This is a patient held document that is valid in hospital and in the community. A ReSPECT conversation may include recommendations for cardiopulmonary resuscitation or a recommendation not for cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
