Royal Papworth clinicians supported a critically ill patient using a new percutaneous heart pump (Impella) procedure in a hospital first last month (October).
Consultant Interventional Cardiologist Dr Stephen Hoole led the team in successfully implanting an Impella percutaneous VAD (Ventricular Assist Device) to open a blocked artery in the patient’s heart during a high-risk CTO PCI (Chronic Total Occlusion Percutaneous Coronary Intervention).
The team included nurses Josefina Villaflor, Konstantina Minou and Biji Manoj; Radiographers Steven Foster and James Lynch, and cardiac physiologists Charlotte Howlett, Franklin Bexhell and Hollie Chambers.
Dr Hoole said: “It was a great team effort all round and the patient is recovering well following his 6-hour procedure. This was a major milestone for the treatment of high risk PCI, heart failure and cardiogenic shock patients and the culmination of three years of planning. Well done to all involved.”
