Royal Papworth Hospital has been named as one of the best NHS Trusts in the country for inpatient experience, according to the Care Quality Commission’s 2020 Adult Inpatient Survey.
The report summarises the experiences of more than 73,000 patients from 137 NHS trusts who spent at least one night in hospital during November 2020.
Patients were asked for their views on various aspects of their care, with Trusts then listed in one of seven categories - from ‘much better than expected’ down to ‘much worse than expected’ - based on the proportion of patients who responded positively compared to the average.
Royal Papworth Hospital has been awarded the highest rating by the CQC of ‘much better than expected’ compared to the national average, with an ‘overall experience’ score of 9.7 out of 10.
The hospital scored particularly well for ‘privacy when being examined or treated’, ‘how clean was the hospital room and ward’ and ‘confidence in the staff treating you’.

Every piece of feedback is valuable to allow us to continuously improve our services.
“Our scores and overall ranking reflect the compassionate, excellent care that every single member of staff strives to provide for our patients each day here at Royal Papworth Hospital. They have worked so hard throughout the past year, despite the multiple competing challenges, and this really is testament to the boundless energy and enthusiasm that everyone brings to their roles.”
“Everyone at Royal Papworth Hospital can be proud of these results today,” added chief executive Stephen Posey.
“For example, our high score for cleanliness would not be possible without our dedicated cleaners whose job has never been more important in line with enhanced infection control requirements.
“Collaborative working, where everyone works together to provide outstanding care, is fundamental to our ethos and I am delighted to see this reflected in the inpatient survey scores.”
