Perfusionists are clinical scientists that work as part of the multi-disciplinary team in theatres and critical care.
Their main responsibility is to run the heart-lung machine during cardiac surgery. The heart-lung machine, also known as cardiopulmonary bypass, does the job of a person's heart by keeping their organs supplied with oxygenated blood during heart surgery. This allows the surgeons time to work on the heart.
The perfusionist will monitor the patient's blood gases and chemistry while on bypass and makes adjustments and administers drugs if needed.
Perfusionists are also involved in critical care with ECMO - extra-corporeal membrance oxygenation - which is used for patients who are in acute respiratory failure. They will join the team who go out to retrieve patients from other hospitals who need ECMO support.
What experience/qualifications do you need?
- Perfusion students must have a science degree. You then complete a master's degree while learning the practical side of your job at the hospital.
